I have installed three of these triggers so far and have had zero for issues. I have also read most all of the reviews, good and bad. FIRST TIP AND MOST IMPORTANT; Give yourself enough time to do this the right way. Next, buy a good file if you don't have one. Use a good vise with jaw pads and check your progress often. This isn't a difficult job if you read the instructions first, take your time and pay attention.

Fit the trigger to the stock first as it will save you some frustration. You can have the trigger properly installed on the action and yet it will not function properly if you don't relieve the stock properly (read instructions). A small, sharp chisel and some 80 grit will do fine for this.

I used a Sharpie to outline the safety post against the trigger so I had an idea of how much material needed to be taken off. Once close I checked every two or three passes with the file. The metal isn't too hard so you can take off a good amount of metal in one or two passes with a good file. Once close enough to work but still a little snug, I used a small sharpening stone and honing oil to polish it so it was real smooth. I did this to all three triggers I did and the results were great. Don't be intimidated by this trigger and the fact that it needs to be fitted. It is well worth the little bit of work needed. The only reason I marked "fitting required" as a "Con" is that I needed to mark one in order to submit the review.

No trigger worth anything is truly "drop in." And if you are dremel tool dependent give it to a gunsmith to do for you. It isn't a hard install but, give yourself the time to do it and be patient. A decent set of small files,a vice and some lay out dye(or a sharpie) and you should be set. Check your progress often as it states in the instructions. Make sure you're filing square as you go. I used the factory spring set with enough tension so it gave good resistance when checking my progress filing. There isn't much difference in filing from almost fitting and perfect so be careful toward the end. I finished with honing oil and a stone. End result was a fantastic trigger. I was a machinist for a few years so this wasn't a big deal Bottom line is it's a great trigger but if you don't have the patience let someone else do it for you

Just ordered my second trigger for the same Ruger 77. I messed up the first one.

It was not Brownells or Timny's fault...it was me.



Got the trigger put it in the rifle..easy, 2 pins. Tried to work the safety and just like the directions said the block on the side of the trigger was below the rotateing safety. Needed to file away the block where they had marked it with blue dye. So I carefully made a scratch with an awl on the trigger block and proceeded to file it down so there was only a very small clearance when you flipped the safety.

Tested the gun with the safety engaged and there was a loud sickening "click". The would have fired if it was loaded. Apparently you want a VERY small clearance. The normal movement of the trigger results in a very small movement at the safety block. Apparently you want a clearance about as thick as a layer of hot oil.

Because I could not figure out how to put the stainless steel back on the trigger I finally bit the bullet and got another trigger.



So...you better be careful when you file

First problem I encountered was the pivot pin hole for trigger was slightly angled which caused trigger to bind, had to remove some material close to sear to allow free movement, factory trigger was fine, second had to remove about .050 material so safety would work which I thought was extensive, I snuck up on it and got it right, third some material had to be removed from the stock for over travel adjuster, no big job. After all this trigger works great and I am pleased with out come but I had to work for it.

I purchased this trigger thinking it was a drop in design that required no further work to modify it or my gun to make it work properly. Wrong!

In the add it says “Parts are fully-finished; heat treated for durability and ready-to-install; requires no alteration to the factory parts.” But in the directions, which come with the trigger it says “ We have adjusted the overtravel screw in our Ruger test action prior to shipment. If you want to change the adjustment please follow step 15.” Step15. “You will have to inlet your stock below where the overtravel adjustment lug enters the stock. Put a bit of inletting black or lipstick on the overtravel screw mounting lug. Install the barreled action in the stock and then remove the barreled action. Remove a small amount of wood where indicated by the inletting black or lipstick.”

In step 12 it mentions “Check to see if the bottom side of the safety selector clears the safety tab on the side of the trigger (we have put dye on this part to make it easy to recognize).” It goes on to say “If there is not enough clearance between the safety selector and the trigger’s safety tab remove the trigger and carefully file the trigger’s safety engagement tab until sufficient clearance has been achieved. It is very important to understand that the rifle should be cocked while checking the safety clearance. Please be careful; if you remove even .005 of an inch too much (the width of 2 human hairs) it may be too much. BE CAREFUL!” This work is not beyond my capability. But, I feel the add is misleading and should mention the work that is expected of you to make the trigger fit and work properly. I chatted with one of Brownells specialists about the trigger and he too did not know there was filing or cutting to make the trigger fit. He again assured me this is a drop in procedure but I went on to point out the directions and to show him pictures. The manufacturer put dye on the part to show where the filing will be done, knowing there has to be some filing done. They did not take the time to mill the part with close enough tolerances for it to fit in the gun. Instead they passed the work and responsibility to do it correctly on to the customer. That is not quality workmanship and not worth the money.

In the following pictures it is clear how much material must be removed from the trigger to make it function properly.

I bought one and promptly filed away too much from the safety tab, so the bolt locked on full safe. I have just now ordered another for $125! I wish Timney would simply tell buyers how much to file off, by way of telling us what the correct thickness is with a small tolerance. I could easily use my case length calipers to do it right the first time. I think I will enjoy this trigger if I do not destroy it that is. Don Blake

I put off installing this trigger for several weeks, as I'm not a gunsmith, or a great enthusiast on patience for small things. I am a home handyman type.

Timney's instructions were right on, although illustrations would have been helpful.

I used a file to remove the metal from the safety tab to clear the safety selector, as I didn't want to take off too much. Patience is the key! File straight. You'll have to put the trigger on several times before the safety selector just clears the safety tab. I don't think the tolerances are quite as critical as Timney makes out.

The overtravel screw on mine wasn't tight, but very easy to adjust per the instructions. I squirted a little blue thread locker on the overtravel screw to hold it in place.

The only thing I forgot was to take a little wood out of the stock for the overtravel adjustment lug when I put it all back together. If you don't, the trigger will bind in the stock causing slamfires. Once I removed the wood, the trigger was straight in the stock and everything worked perfectly. When test firing, I had no problems.

I used the original Ruger spring, which was plenty light for my 7mm Mag. I did not adust the trigger weight.

I'm going to replace the triggers on two other Ruger Mark II's for family.

Great trigger with detailed instruction. Takes a little time to test and fit. Please take the time. Glad to have purchaes it.

Installed this adjustable trigger to replace the factory trigger in my M77 Mk II. The new trigger did take some fitting, but I checked my work frequently to ensure that all worked properly. The immediate benefit at the range was smaller groups. The lighter trigger pull makes it easier to get the shot off smoothly.

this is the best trigger in any of my guns . I had to file the safty . Well worth the fitten the safty . shot so nice the ruger m 77 mark II is a better shoter now .

This is an outstanding unit. A bit of file and stone work to allow the safety to rotate into position and voila', 100% better.
The factory over travel stop is perfect as is, found no need to adjust.
If you are willing to file/stone a little and test fit a few times, you'll not have made a bad choice.

This is a light, crisp, and safe trigger system for the Ruger centerfire rifles. This can also be fitted to the Ruger Hawkeye rifles. Even with Ruger's improved factory trigger on this rifle, the Timney is a viable replacement that will improve the trigger pull. Fitting the safety is required, but that is a straightforeward job. Timney is our most installed brand of aftermarket trigger.

Prior to installing this trigger, my gunsmith skills were limited to installing a sling. The directions were very easy to follow, and it worked perfectly. The most difficult part is carefully removing enough metal so the safety will function properly. This too was covered in the directions.

I was a little nervous about installing a trigger myself, because I wanted to be sure it was safe. It was very easy and took me about an hour. Grinding the tab on the trigger to allow the safety to work was easy with a dremel. Then I used a file and sandpaper to finish it off. I had a little trouble with the overtravel screw not letting the trigger move far enough to fire every time. Timney support was excellent, they told me exactly how to adjust it.
I should have bought a replacement trigger a long time ago. It feels great at a crisp 2 lbs, compared to the creepy factory trigger. I beat the heck out of it and worked the bolt extremely hard and couldn't get it to slamfire, so I trust it.

Nice replacemant over Original trigger, had small filing for safety. clean crisp 2lbs pull.

Just installed the trigger, it took about 1 hr. I had to file back 3/16"
for the safety to work. the instructions are out of this world. I find that the trigger makes a big difference.
