Not for LR-308!(2010-06-04)
Bought this kit for my LR-308, as suggested in the article on building an LR-308 in the guntech section. The buffer body in this kit is too long for the .308 and does not allow the bolt carrier group to retract far enough to lock back on the bolt catch. With no magazine in, it just wont lock at all. With a magazine, the bolt face 'locks' or bumps up against the magazine follower - not good. Caused me all kinds of grief before figuring it out.
As for the rest, I'm sure it's a fine kit for an AR-15, although the flats at the rear of the tube got distorted very easily when I tightened the tube on using an armorer's tool, even though I used a torque wrench set to the specified range (35-39 ft/lbs). I would watch it carefully when tightening and stop at the first sign of distortion. I don't fancy having to take it off, afraid it'll strip completely.
Check the spring length & buffer(2010-07-02)
When using a regular AR spring & buffer supplied I found that the AR would not go into battery. Not enough strength in the spring. I then switched to an extra power (10%) spring & the bolt quickly went into battery. I want to try it with an enidine buffer & see if it still works. The Enidine shock absorber is smaller and it may cut down on "Bolt Bounce". Brownells's sells them.I would not use it in a dedicated rifle for home defense.
Perfect for my Magpul PRS stock(2014-05-08)
Needed to replace my standard M4 stock with a Magpul PRS for some serious bench rest shooting. I got the Magpul PRS AR10 version because it was in stock and on sale elsewhere. Per Magpul the difference is ONLY in the cheek plate which appears true. This completion kit and PRS stock fit perfect on my AR15. I figured I would mention this because the other reviewer mentions this didn't fit on his 308. There are many different 308's. For what it's worth, I have the EXACT same PRS stock on my Armalite AR10. Fits fine. So, if same stock fits on both buffer tubes, the only difference in tubes could be threads, right? Again.. every 308 AR is a little different. Choose accordingly.
To the fella with the 308(2016-03-01)
To the gent with the 308, you cant use an AR15 rifle buffer with a 308. Not any platform. You must use a 308 buffer, in rifle length, and a rifle length receiver extension tube. The AR15 rifle length buffer is set up to run with a AR15 or M16 BCG, the AR15/M16 buffer is to long and to light weight for the 308. Mainly to long, the 308 BCGs are longer than the AR15/M16 BCGs. Just change the buffer, and spring to an 308 rifle length buffer, and a 308 rifle length buffer spring, wahla fixed. The tubes are all the same for 308/AR15/M16 for rifle length receiver extension tubes. So your good there.
IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!(2018-02-18)
I was skeptical at first and worried about bolt bounce or failure to retract all the way, but to my amazement, it is a quality piece of engineering. I put one on an m16a1 clone build and I'm about to buy another for a build im doing for a friend. It has the perfect buffer and spring tension to use on a m16 style BCG and full length rifle system. I dont know how it will work for you guys running med/carbine length, but im sure it will work.
